TTR Calculator for Table Tennis – Calculate Your Skill Level
The TTR Calculator is the central tool for calculating your personal skill level in German table tennis. This system objectively evaluates the playing ability of all table tennis players in Germany and presents it in the form of a point value.
How does the TTR Calculator work?
The calculator uses a mathematical formula based on the Elo system from chess. The basic formula is:
After each game, your TTR value adjusts according to the following formula:
The Change Constant plays an important role here, which depends on several factors:
- Base value: 16 Points
- +4 Points if you haven't had any rated events in the last 365 days
- +4 Points if you have fewer than 30 rated singles matches
- +4 Points if you are under 21 years old
- +4 Points if you are under 16 years old
Thus, the change constant can range between 16 and 32. The younger you are or the fewer games you have, the faster your TTR value can rise or fall.
TTR Values and Win Probabilities
The following table shows the win probabilities based on TTR differences:
| TTR Difference | Win probability stronger player | Win probability weaker player |
|---|---|---|
| 0-1 | 50% | 50% |
| 20-22 | 58% | 42% |
| 50 | 68% | 32% |
| 100 | 82% | 18% |
| 150 | 91% | 9% |
| 200 | 96% | 4% |
Special Features of the TTR System
Youth Skill Increase (QNSZ)
All young players up to 17 years old receive an automatic skill increase of 6 TTR points at the end of each quarter. This accounts for the natural physical development of young players.
Youth Development Bonus (QNEB)
Young players up to 16 years old with playing eligibility outside of Germany receive an additional bonus of 10 TTR points per quarter to compensate for the lack of playing opportunities against national opponents.
During prolonged breaks from play, the TTR value drops automatically:
- After 24 months without play: -80 Points
- Every 6 months thereafter: -20 Points each
- After 3 years without play, there is no further deduction
Exceptions: Youth players and players with foreign playing eligibility are exempt from this deduction.
The following results are considered for TTR calculation:
- All league matches in Germany
- Cup matches
- Ranking tournaments
- Individual championships
- Open tournaments (Singles and Team tournaments)
- Selection matches (National matches, Germany Cup)
- International competitions with German players
Not considered are:
- Friendly matches and exhibition games
- Internal club tournaments
- Training matches
- Games with handicaps or modified rules
- Fun tournaments (Handicap, etc.)
- Alternative Table Tennis disciplines (Hardbat, Clickball, 4-player table)
The official Q-TTR values (Quarterly TTR values) are published four times a year and calculated on the following cut-off dates:
- Feb 11th
- May 11th
- Aug 11th
- Dec 11th
These Q-TTR values are the basis for official measures, such as:
- Team registrations
- Tournament class assignments
- Seeding at tournaments
TTR values can be viewed on the websites of the respective associations.
Practical Tips for your TTR Value
Improving your TTR
- Targeted Training: Focus on your weaknesses
- Mental Strength: Stay focused, especially against weaker opponents
- Tactical Play: Play with strategy, not just risk
- Tournament Selection: Participate in tournaments where you have realistic chances of winning
Avoiding TTR Traps
- Lack of Motivation: Don't lose motivation when playing against significantly weaker opponents
- Fear: Avoid excessive respect for stronger players
- Too much pressure: The TTR value should motivate you, not inhibit you
- Game Refusal: Do not refuse games just out of fear of TTR loss
Frequently Asked Questions about the TTR System
The assessment of a "good" TTR value depends heavily on the context:
- Lowest Leagues (Kreisklasse): approx. 900-1200 Points
- District League (Kreisliga): approx. 1100-1400 Points
- District Class (Bezirksklasse): approx. 1300-1600 Points
- District League (Bezirksliga): approx. 1500-1750 Points
- Association Class (Verbandsklasse): approx. 1650-1850 Points
- Association League (Verbandsliga): approx. 1800-2000 Points
- Upper League (Oberliga): approx. 1950-2150 Points
- Regional League (Regionalliga): approx. 2100-2300 Points
- Federal League (Bundesliga): over 2250 Points
These values are guidelines and can vary by region.
Your TTR value is recalculated after every event (league match, cup match, tournament). The official Q-TTR values are published four times a year (Feb 11, May 11, Aug 11, Dec 11).
Current values can be viewed on the websites of the respective associations.
For new players, there are two possibilities for initial rating:
- Dynamic League Match Initial Rating: Based on your position in the team roster, an average value of all players at the same position in opposing teams is determined.
- Dynamic Tournament Initial Rating: If your first game takes place at a tournament, your TTR value is determined based on results against players with existing TTR values.
There are age-dependent lower limits for initialization. For adults aged 18 and over, these are 900 points (male) and 800 points (female).
The maximum gain or loss per game depends on your change constant (16-32) and the difference between the expected and actual result:
- For an expected win (90% probability), you win a maximum of about 1-3 points
- For an unexpected win (10% probability), you could win up to 29 points
- For an unexpected loss, you can lose up to 29 points accordingly
For young players under 16 or players with fewer than 30 singles, the changes are larger because their change constant is higher.
No, not all games are considered for TTR calculation. The following games have no influence on your TTR value:
- Friendly matches
- Training matches
- Internal club tournaments
- Games with modified rules (e.g. Handicap, Sudden-Death)
- Fun tournaments with handicaps
- Alternative Table Tennis disciplines (Hardbat, Clickball, etc.)
Only official competitions played according to international TT rules are included in the calculation.
Conclusion: The TTR Value in Table Tennis
The TTR System has established itself in Germany as an objective measure of playing strength. It gives beginners and experienced players a clear orientation when assessing their own performance and that of their opponents.
Despite the solid mathematical basis, the TTR value does not capture everything that makes up table tennis. Tactics, mental strength, daily form, and equipment advantages are only partially visible in the key figure.
Use the TTR Calculator as a practical tool for your table tennis career, but don't forget: The decisive factors are fun in the game and personal development, not the next number.
